Growth and Changes in Plants

Hello grade 3's and parents, next week we will be exploring growth and changes in plants Click on the link to view a video on the importance of plants to humans, animals, and the environment.

Here is some background information about what plants need to grow and how their different parts function. Then go ahead and try the activity. Once you're done, you're ready to take the quiz.

Did you know? Humans from various cultures such as Aboriginal people, use plants from the wood of trees for shelter. They also use plants for food, clothing and even medicine.

Lines of Symmetry

As you are now all familiar with congruent shapes from last term, we are beginning with lines of symmetry. Note: Please click on congruence for a refresher.

The attached video is on lines of symmetry so you can better understand that it is all around us.

Here is an interactive activity to continue what we have been learning in class. Bring your results to class on Monday. We will discuss what you thought of the activity.

For an extra challenge you are to complete your very own pattern on a peice of paper. Figure out how many lines of symmetry your pattern has. Don't forget to bring it in to class.

Science from the ground up!

Click on the link which introduces you to the upcoming unit in science. Soils in the environment!

Earth Week is finally approaching on Monday, April 20th to Friday, April 24th! Perform the experiment on the worksheet on what would happen to the soil in a cup in several situations. Note: This experiment is safe to do at home. Bring in your worksheet the following week as we will discuss in class.

Think of ways you can help to not pollute our earth. Here are some examples to help you get started. We will choose one for our class to do on Earth Day.

ATTENTION Parents! I am pleased to announce that during Earth Week, we will be attending the Disney documentary called 'Earth' which relates to our unit. I will give each student a letter to take home in the following week for further details.

Discovering Tangrams

As you all know, we are starting our geometry unit and will be working with tangrams.

A tangram is an ancient chinese puzzle, consisting of 7 geometric shapes. The word "tangram" means Chinese drawing. Click here to get your own tangram puzzle that you may print, cut out and keep for later.

Below is a great activity to get you started. Here is what you are going to do. Try to recreate as many tangram shapes as you can that are displayed on the web page.

Can you remember which tans are congruent? Write it down in your math journal and we will see tomorrow who guessed it right!

Remember you can use the math dictionnary on my blog for help with unfamiliar words.
